Model Mania

“Work it, own it.”

As funny and cliche as this phrase may sound, its probably the best advice that I’ve ever been given as a model.  Making a good photo is more than just having beautiful face and a thin body- its about confidence.  In fact I’d say its mainly about confidence.  As I flip through the magazines and see models of all kinds, I see attractive women for sure.  Usually if I see these women on the streets I’m not drawn to them.  What makes them stand out in the magazines? I’d say its their presence in front of the camera, their ability to loose themselves and express something new.  These women have the ability to be beautiful actresses in front of the camera, creating truly stunning shots that you remember.

So, how do non-pros produce shots as beautiful?  The same way they do. Here a few tips that I’ve used over the years that may help you:

1.  Don’t take yourself too seriously.  The camera is not there to show off your faults; its there to show you off.  Be confident enough to loose yourself so it can help you tell your story.

2.  Like Stuart Smalley, do some affirmations in the mirror.  Practice poses and smiles- build your self- confidence.  Turn on your favorite music, pull out your fav mags- pump yourself up.

3. Have a drink, or two. (Not too many of course.)

Before every portrait session I”ll have you do a brief personality profile that will help me get to know you better. If I know who you are, where you are in your life and what you want, I can help draw you out in new ways- making the photoshoot fun, not painful, and creating photos that are truly reflective of the real you.  Ones you want to remember.
